# Roo Code setup

Roo Code is a VS Code coding agent with modes for coding, architecture and debugging. Its **OpenAI Compatible** provider connects it to Claudech.

## Before you start

- **A Claudech API key** from [API keys](https://claudech.com/api-keys). API access unlocks after your first purchase.
- **A model id** from [Models](https://claudech.com/docs/models), for example `claude-opus-5-5`.

## Settings

Open Roo Code's settings and create or edit an API configuration profile:

| Setting | Value |
| --- | --- |
| API Provider | **OpenAI Compatible** |
| Base URL | `https://api.claudech.com/v1` |
| API Key | your `sk-...` key |
| Model | `claude-opus-5-5` (or any Claudech model id) |

Set the context window to `1000000` and enable image input; every Claudech model supports both. Save the profile and select it in the chat panel.

## One profile per mode

Roo Code can use a different profile in each mode. A setup that works well:

| Mode | Model |
| --- | --- |
| Architect | `claude-fable-5-1` |
| Code | `claude-opus-5-5` |
| Debug | `claude-opus-5` |
| Ask | `claude-sonnet-5` |

Create one profile per model with the same base URL and key, then assign them in each mode's settings.

## Troubleshooting

| Symptom | Fix |
| --- | --- |
| `401` or "invalid API key" | Re-copy the key without spaces; check it is active under **API keys** |
| `404 model_not_found` | Use the Claudech model id exactly, with no vendor prefix |
| Requests go to the wrong address | The base URL must be exactly `https://api.claudech.com/v1` with no trailing slash |
| `402 insufficient_balance` | Top up under [Billing](https://claudech.com/billing) |
